Prepare your Gmail or G Suite account for connecting to Outlook and Office 365. 2/7/2020. 3 minutes to read.In this articleBefore you account from Outlook on the web, or account to Outlook, you need to prepare your Gmail account. You need to turn on 2-step verification for Gmail and then create an app password that Office 365 will use with your Gmail address to make the connection.You will also have to do this if your admin is planning to migrate your or to Office 365. Enable IMAP for Gmail and G Suite AccountsPlease make sure that you have enabled IMAP before you start the migration process.
Failure to do so will result in migration-related issues.To enable IMAP for Gmail or G Suite Accounts:.Sign in to your Gmail/G Suite account using a supported browser.Click the gear icon located at the top right of the screen.In the drop-down menu that appears, click Settings.Switch to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.Scroll down to the IMAP access, and make sure that Enable IMAP is selected.Scroll to the bottom. Click Save Changes.Enable your Gmail to be connected by Office 365To use an app password with Gmail, you have to first turn on 2-step verification, and then obtain the app password.
Once you have an app password you can use that in combination with your username to connect to Gmail. To turn on 2-step verification.Sign in to your Gmail account.Select Google apps My Account.On the My Account page choose Sign-in & security.Under the Password & sign-in method, choose the arrow next to the 2-Step verification, and provide your password if asked. NoteIf you have a google apps account and you can't see this setting, your admin has to first turn it on. For instructions (for admin), see.On the Signing in with 2-step verification page, choose Start setup.Re-enter your password if asked, and in the Set up your phone step, enter or verify your cell phone.
ImportantThe 16-character app password is displayed with spaces so it is easier to read. When you enter it to the app you want to connect, ignore the spaces and enter it as an unbroken string of 16 characters.Now you're ready to add your Gmail account to Outlook. When you're prompted for a password, you enter this app password for your Gmail account. Don't enter your Gmail password.

Catalina and SAMLLike with most of their initial macOS announcements, Apple ® was fairly vague in regards to how the new Catalina release will affect Mac ® admins. After cutting through the thick jungle of user experience changes, however, one can find that Catalina also brings about some major changes to.One such change is the inclusion of SAML among the protocols that third-party vendors can use to.
By expanding this capability, Apple is allowing solutions like Identity-as-a-Service, or web application single sign-on (SSO), solutions to manage authentication for Macs. This change also potentially opens the door for Google ® to use some of their solutions to manage authentication for Macs, like the IAM that comes with G Suite.
G Suite and SAMLG Suite is widely used among many organizations for email, file storage, and other productivity tools. Organizations also utilize its associated G Suite Directory, also called Google Cloud Identity, for managing user access to G Suite resources.Historically, these solutions from Google have existed solely in their own ecosystem, fairly separate from the various other cloud resources used by organizations today. As the competition between their cloud infrastructure opponents, AWS and Azure, rises, Google is looking to push the capabilities of their cloud suite as well. A part of said expansion includes integration and management of cloud infrastructure and web applications through SAML. MacOS Catalina G Suite IntegrationGiven these advancements from Google on top of what we know about Catalina, it seems that a macOS Catalina G Suite integration for identity management may be possible. Unfortunately, Google’s identity management capabilities are mainly limited to authentication for web applications and other cloud infrastructure.Of course, IT admins realize that authentication is one step of the overall identity management process. Other identity management tasks include managing user accounts, provisioning/deprovisioning, and connecting users to a wide range of other services including WiFi/VPNs, files, legacy applications, servers, Windows ® /Linux ® machines, and much more.

A Better WaySo, while the macOS Catalina G Suite integration may ultimately be possible, it may not be as useful as one might think.
